First of all, seriously...who names a week Hate Week...I've been wondering that for a while and i was just wondering what the point of it is. I love how they find out their country isn't against Eurasia, but actually Eastasia and at first they think of how Goldstein set them up. But right away their hatred turns to Eastasia...even though they have no real reason to feel abhorrence against them. Once again the woman outside Julia and Winston's building singing a song...coincidence, or foreshadowing...i would have to say it is a bit of foreshadowing with a hint of dramatic irony. It is dramatic irony because we know that the couple is going to get busted, they just cant realize it yet.
After reading chapter 5, it makes a person feel sorry for the couple for the way they get treated and whats going to happen to them. But at the same time, it was like i wanted to say...Dude seriously, how could you not see this coming...duhhhhhhhh

Yeah, I think that Winston and Julia did see this coming, but they just blocked out the truth from their minds and lived for the pleasure of the moment.
I think that the woman's song and perhaps the woman herself are a symbol for something...I'm just not sure what that something is exactly. Perhaps it is foreshadowing something as well...
I agree. How could they not see that coming? They knew that they were going to get caught sometime, so why were they so surprised?
I think that the song that the woman is singing is a symbol. We read earlier that the proles sang the song when they were about to die so it is foreshadowing and symbolism. It is foreshadowing that Winston and Julia are going to get caught and die.
I agree that they should have seen that coming but in a way i think they kind of did. They knew that sooner or later this would happen but the book is what foreshadowed this coming, that of which they didn't realize it soon enough. I don't really know what you're talking about about the whole hate week thing it is their week where they are able to express how they feel about the other countries, the Party wants to see if people are with them.
